A Dance with Dragons by September?

Anyone who knows me or spends more than five minutes reading my previous posts knows I am a George RR Martin fan.
The internets have been heating up lately with posts all over the place either bashing or defending George for being super late on his next novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons. I don’t want to throw gas on any fires, but I am firmly in the “defending George” camp. I also don’t want to link to any of the sites bashing him because frankly, I don’t support them – these folks aren’t about intelligent discourse and talking through issues with people who have opposite views than they do. They come off as entitled little whiners, so we’ll just leave them in that dusty, lonely little corner of the internet over there near the back.
The Man Himself finally must have gotten tired of reading all the crap about him flying around and the people posting in defense of him, and responded by providing an update on the status of A Dance with Dragons. He also gave a (in my opinion) well deserved bitch-slap to his detractors. You can read the update here, and the bitch-slap here.
As a writer myself, I have a hard enough time completing a couple new short stories in a year. I can’t imagine how much creative brain sweat it must take to create a brilliantly entertaining and ridiculously complex novel of the size and quality people have come to expect of GRRM.
The good news is he has stated that he thinks it could be done by June. That means a September or October publish date. Just in time for my birthday.
EDIT: John Scalzi talks about the issue with GRRM and ADWD being late in his Whatever post, “Pissy Fans”. See here.

Charlie Stross, another well known/respected professional author, offers another perspective on this and writing complex work to deadlines. Great stuff.
